Instruction: On November 14-16, 2006, Jeff gave an instructive demonstration for the Introduction
to Animal and Poultry Science laboratory at Virginia Tech. This was his second year to be invited
as a guest lecturer for the required freshman course, Introduction
to Animal and Poultry Science.
Jeff
served as a guest lecturer for the
Introduction to Animal and Poultry Science laboratory at Virginia Tech
both in 2005 and 2006. Introduction to Animal and Poultry Science
is
a freshman level
course that all Animal and Poultry Science students must complete
during their
initial year at Virginia Tech. The lecture portion of the course
is taught by
Dr. Beal with the laboratory being primarily taught by Dr. Beal along
with
graduate teaching aids. The lab was divided into six sections
with two sections
being held each day for three consecutive days. Each section
contained about 25
students for a total of approximately 150 students enrolled in the
lab.
The
focus of the week’s lab was the understanding of basic equine handling
and
body language along with basic ground training. Jeff took three
of our
youngsters from Hill Crest Farm to use as demo horses for these lab
sessions.
Students gathered around the round pen and watched as Jeff performed a
few
basic foundation skills with the colts such as picking up hooves,
desensitizing
the colts to clippers and other odd objects, and longing . All
questions were
welcomed, and Jeff occasionally quizzed the students and requested
their input.
Classes and clinics such as this are critical to educating equine
enthusiasts
and horse owners. Jeff greatly enjoyed the opportunity to assist
with this lab
and looks forward to future teaching opportunities.

This also helps with teaching
the horse to move his hindquarter away from pressure.

strange objects and noises by rattling

until the horse fully accepts it.

Training "House Calls": Hill Crest Farm is now offering training “house
calls”. Jeff can come to your farm or facility to assist you with training your
horse in the environment that both you and your horse are familiar with. Some
of the issues that he may be able to assist you with include catching, halter
breaking, trailer loading, clipping, longing, tying, bathing, handling feet, and
general ground manners. Under saddle, Jeff’s work may include a combination of
a lesson for the rider as well as a training session for the horse (working
with both horse and rider to achieve the desirable goal). House call sessions
usually involve 1 to 1 1/2 hour sessions depending on the situation. Some
situations may require subsequent visits. Current charge for house calls is $30
per hour locally; will discuss fee for house calls requiring travel outside of
the area.
